I remember sitting in a windowless training room back in 2012, listening to a consultant in a slim-fit suit explain why our department’s assessment data was “sub-optimal.” He was using all the right buzzwords, but he had no idea that half my Year 9s were currently trying to see if a highlighter works on a desk. That was my first real lesson in how performance differs from learning. We were celebrating high scores on Friday afternoon worksheets, thinking we’d conquered the curriculum, only to watch that same knowledge evaporate the moment they walked through the school gates on Monday. It’s a hollow victory, and quite frankly, it’s exhausting to chase.

I’m not here to give you another theoretical framework or a glossy PDF that requires three hours of prep you don’t have. Instead, I want to talk about the messy reality of what actually sticks when the classroom is loud and the clock is ticking. We’re going to look at why a student can ace a multiple-choice quiz but fail a basic application task, and how you can spot the difference without spending your entire Sunday marking.

We’ve all been there. You’ve just finished a crisp, well-paced lesson. The kids were nodding, the answers were flying during the plenary, and you’ve walked out of that room feeling like you’ve actually achieved something. But then, two weeks later, you open the books for a retrieval quiz and the room goes silent. It’s devastating, but it’s also predictable. What you actually experienced wasn’t learning; it was the fluency illusion in education. They weren’t mastering the concept; they were just riding the wave of your momentum.

The problem is that there is a massive gap between retention vs immediate recall. When a student can repeat a definition five minutes after you’ve said it, they aren’t demonstrating knowledge—they’re just mirroring your energy. True learning requires that awkward, sometimes messy period of struggle where information actually moves into long-term memory. If the task is too easy or too heavily scaffolded, they feel a sense of competence that is entirely borrowed. They feel like they’ve got it, but they’re really just skimming the surface of the topic, waiting for the moment the safety net is pulled away.

Retention vs Immediate Recall the Wet Wednesday Test

Here is the reality of the situation: there is a massive gulf between retention vs immediate recall. I’ve seen it a thousand times. You run a brilliant retrieval starter on a Tuesday morning, and the kids are flying. They’re answering questions, they’re nodding, and for a fleeting moment, you think, “Right, they’ve got it.” But that’s often just the high of a fresh stimulus. It’s easy to perform when the information is still sitting right there on the surface of their minds.

The real test is what I call the “Wet Wednesday Test.” It’s three weeks later, you’ve moved on to a completely different topic, and the energy in the room is low because it’s raining and period five is dragging. If you circle back to that previous concept, do they actually own it, or has it vanished? True long-term memory consolidation doesn’t happen in the glow of a successful lesson; it happens when the context has changed and the initial excitement has worn off. If they can’t access it when the classroom feels a bit chaotic, they haven’t learned it—they’ve just mimicked it.

Five Ways to Tell if They’ve Actually Learned It (Or Are Just Good at Being Good Students)

  • Stop relying on the “hands up” method. A kid who’s quick to raise their hand is often just performing confidence, not demonstrating mastery. If you want to see if they’ve actually learned, you need to see what they do when they aren’t being prompted by your gaze.
  • The “Next Lesson” Litmus Test. If a student can nail a concept during your guided practice but has absolutely no clue where to start when you walk in the next morning, you haven’t seen learning; you’ve just seen a very successful performance of your own instructions.
  • Watch out for the “Scaffold Crutch.” It’s easy to mistake a student’s ability to complete a task with a word bank or a sentence starter for actual understanding. They aren’t learning the concept; they’re learning how to use the tool you gave them. Take the tool away and see what’s left.
  • Prioritise “Low-Stakes, High-Frequency” over the “Big Reveal.” If you only check for understanding during a formal assessment, you’re just measuring how well they can perform under pressure. Real learning is revealed in the messy, ungraded, five-minute check-ins when they think no one is looking.
  • Check for Transfer, Not Just Repetition. If they can answer the exact question you asked yesterday, that’s memory. If they can apply that same logic to a slightly different scenario—one you haven’t rehearsed with them—that’s learning. One is a script; the other is ownership.

The Reality Check: Three Things to Carry Into Your Next Lesson

Stop mistaking a smooth lesson for a successful one; if the kids are just mirroring your words back to you because you’ve made it too easy, they aren’t learning, they’re just performing.

If you can’t test a concept when the kids are tired, distracted, or it’s the end of a long week, you haven’t taught it—you’ve just borrowed their short-term memory.

Prioritise the “uncomfortable” retrieval over the “comfortable” worksheet; true learning happens when they have to struggle slightly to find the answer, not when they’re just following a pattern you’ve laid out for them.

The Long Game in a Short-Term World

At the end of the day, we have to stop falling in love with the “easy wins.” It is incredibly tempting to look at a class of thirty kids breezing through a scaffolded worksheet and think, we’ve nailed it. But if that success disappears the moment you take the training wheels off, you haven’t taught them anything; you’ve just managed their performance for forty minutes. We have to be brave enough to trade that immediate, sugary sense of achievement for the harder, slower work of building actual cognitive durability. It’s about distinguishing between a student who can mimic a process and a student who actually owns the concept when the pressure is on.

I know it’s exhausting. I know it feels like you’re failing when the retrieval quiz looks a bit messy or when the “fluency” you thought you saw evaporates by Friday afternoon. But please, don’t let the pressure for quick results rob you of the satisfaction of real teaching. The goal isn’t to have a perfect lesson every single day; the goal is to ensure that when these kids walk out of your classroom and into the world, they actually carry something with them. Focus on the learning, not just the performance, and I promise you, the results will eventually find their way to the surface.
