If you’re teaching physics, don’t start with the formula; start with the feeling of a car braking suddenly. By bridging the gap between theory and practice through these small, tangible anchors, you aren’t just “simplifying” the content—you’re giving them the mental hooks they need to hang the harder ideas on later. Without those hooks, the theory just slides right off their brains and onto the floor.

Most of the “theory” we’re expected to teach lives in a vacuum. To actually achieve conceptual understanding through illustration, you have to stop treating the abstract idea as the starting point. Instead, use a concrete object, a local news story, or even a shared classroom experience to build those initial mental models and concrete imagery. If they can’t see it, they can’t hold it in their heads.

The trick isn’t just throwing a random example at them and hoping it sticks; it’s about bridging the gap between theory and practice in a way that doesn’t feel patronising. You aren’t dumbing it down; you are providing the scaffolding they need to climb. When the energy in the room starts to dip—and let’s be honest, it usually does around lesson four—it’s that one solid, relatable comparison that keeps them from drifting off. It turns a confusing, invisible concept into something they can actually grab hold of before the bell rings.

Five Ways to Keep Your Head Above Water When the Concepts Get Heavy

  • Stop the ‘definition-first’ trap. I’ve spent too many lessons watching eyes glaze over because I started with the abstract term. Flip it. Give them the example first—the messy, real-world version—and let them work out the definition themselves. It’s much harder to lose them when they actually have something to hold onto.
  • Use the ‘one weird thing’ rule. When you’re explaining a concept, don’t just give the textbook example everyone has seen a thousand times. Use something slightly odd or specific to their lives. If you’re teaching economics, don’t just talk about supply and demand in a vacuum; talk about why the price of a specific brand of trainers just spiked. It sticks because it’s real.
  • The ‘Compare and Contrast’ sanity check. Once they think they’ve grasped the abstract idea, throw a curveball. Show them two examples—one that fits the concept and one that looks like it fits but actually doesn’t. If they can spot the difference, they actually understand the principle; if they can’t, they’re just parroting your words.
  • Visualise the invisible. If you can’t draw it, you probably haven’t simplified it enough. Even for history or literature, find a physical proxy. If you’re talking about power dynamics or tension, use something they can see—a physical distance between objects or a specific colour palette. It gives their brains a landing strip for the abstract stuff.
  • Limit your ‘example clutter’. This is where we get caught out when we’re tired. We think more examples equals more clarity, but usually, it just equals more noise. Pick two solid, rock-steady examples and drill them. It’s better they deeply understand two real-world applications than vaguely recognise five different ones.

The Reality Check: What Actually Sticks

Stop chasing the perfect abstract definition; if they can’t link the concept to a real-world object or a messy, lived experience, they haven’t actually learned it—they’ve just memorised a sentence.

Don’t treat examples as “extra” content for the high flyers; they are the primary scaffolding that keeps your middle-attaining students from drowning when the textbook gets too dense.

Use examples to manage the cognitive load—give them one solid, relatable anchor point before you try to layer on the complex theory, otherwise, you’re just watching them glaze over.
