  • Manage the workload, not just the mindset. We talk about “resilience” as if it’s a character trait kids can just switch on, but sometimes a kid isn’t “fixed” by a mindset shift—they’re just exhausted by a curriculum that’s moved too fast and a marking pile that’s too high.
  • Use feedback as a roadmap, not a verdict. If your marking only tells them what they got wrong, you’re reinforcing a fixed mindset; if you give them one tiny, actionable thing they can do to fix it in the next ten minutes, you’re actually teaching them how to navigate struggle.

Stop looking for the “magic” in the mindset itself; the evidence suggests that praising effort without direction is just noise. If you’re going to bother with it, tie it to specific, actionable feedback that a student can actually use to improve their work, rather than just telling them to “try harder.”

Don’t let the replication crisis scare you away from the core idea, but do let it stop you from buying into the cult of personality. We need to move past the glossy, oversimplified posters and focus on the small, repeatable instructional shifts that actually help a kid navigate a difficult concept.

Mindset isn’t a substitute for good teaching or a robust curriculum. A student can have the most resilient attitude in the country, but if the lesson is poorly sequenced or the scaffolding is missing, they’re still going to hit a wall—and it won’t be because of their “fixed mindset.”

My advice? Stop looking for the next big “mindset” hack to fix your results. Instead, focus on the things that actually survive the chaos of a Tuesday afternoon. Build a classroom where mistakes are treated as data points rather than character flaws, and where the work is challenging enough to require effort but structured enough to prevent despair. We don’t need more posters on the walls; we need authentic teaching that proves to our students, through every small win, that their effort actually leads somewhere. That is the only kind of mindset that lasts.
