It’s the same old story: some academic in a quiet office decides how we should be teaching, then acts surprised when it doesn’t work in a room of thirty Year 9s who are more interested in their lost hoodies than your pedagogical nuances. They make it sound like a complex, multi-stage ritual, but they miss the point of how elaboration strengthens memory in a real-world setting. It isn’t about filling out expensive worksheets; it’s about the messy, vital work of helping a student tie a new fact to something they actually care about before the bell rings.

I’m not here to give you another theoretical framework to add to your pile of half-read professional development handbooks. Instead, I want to talk about what this actually looks like when you’ve got ten minutes left in a lesson and the energy in the room is cratering. If you want them to actually keep the information, you have to move toward deep processing theory. You can’t just give them a fact and hope it sticks like wet cement. It’s about semantic encoding techniques—making the meaning matter. Now, here is the rub: most of the literature on semantic encoding techniques makes it sound like you need to design a bespoke, multi-sensory experience for every single concept. You don’t. In a real classroom, you don’t have the luxury of sitting a Year 9 class down for a forty-minute deep dive into the nuances of meaning. What you actually need is to bridge the gap between a dry fact and something they already care about. It’s about moving them away from just repeating a definition like a parrot and toward making a connection that actually sticks.

If you want to leverage associative learning principles without spending your entire Sunday planning, stop looking for new worksheets and start asking better questions. When a student gives you a textbook answer, don’t just tick it and move on. Ask them, “How is this like that thing we looked at last Tuesday?” or “Why would this matter to someone living in 1914?” You are forcing them into deep processing by making the new information collide with their existing mental maps. It’s low-prep, it takes thirty seconds, and it’s infinitely more effective than asking them to highlight a paragraph for the third time.

Five ways to actually do this without losing your lunch break

  • Stop asking “What is it?” and start asking “Why does it matter?” If you want them to elaborate, you have to move past the one-word answers. Instead of asking what a specific historical event was, ask them why a person living then might have reacted differently than we do now. It forces them to weave the fact into a narrative rather than just reciting it like a parrot.
  • Use the “Relate it to the rubbish” method. I don’t mean literally, but I mean connecting new, dry concepts to the stuff they actually care about—the music, the games, or the social hierarchies they navigate every day. If they can hook a new piece of information onto an existing mental anchor, it sticks. If it’s just floating in isolation, it’s gone by period three.
  • The “Two-Minute Connection” rule. You don’t need a thirty-minute seminar on cognitive load. At the end of a lesson, when the energy is dipping and they’re eyeing the clock, give them two minutes to write down one way today’s topic links to what we did last Tuesday. It’s low stakes, requires zero prep from you, and forces that mental glue to set.
  • Don’t fear the “Wrong” connection. Sometimes, when a student tries to elaborate, they go down a rabbit hole that’s slightly off-track. In a perfect world, you’d correct them instantly. In a real classroom, if they are actually attempting to build a mental bridge—even a wobbly one—let them finish the thought. The effort of building the connection is more important for their brain than the perfect accuracy of the initial link.
  • Model the “Thinking Out Loud” process. They won’t know how to elaborate if they’ve never heard you do it. When you’re at the whiteboard, don’t just state a fact; narrate your own mental struggle. Say, “I’m thinking about this because it reminds me of…” or “This is similar to X, but different because of Y.” Show them that thinking isn’t just retrieving data, it’s making sense of it.

The Bottom Line: Making it Work in a Real Classroom

Stop treating elaboration like a separate lesson; it’s just the act of asking “why” or “how” during the bits of teaching you’re already doing.

If you can’t find the time to plan complex scaffolds, just focus on helping them link the new concept to something they already remember from last term.

Forget the fancy terminology—if they can explain a concept in their own words without looking at their notes, you’ve won the battle.

But remember, you aren’t trying to rebuild their entire cognitive architecture in a single forty-minute period. You are just trying to plant a few seeds that will actually take root. Focus on the small, authentic connections that survive the chaos of a Tuesday afternoon. Teaching is a long game, and while the initiatives come and go, the ability to help a student truly understand the ‘why’ behind the ‘what’ is the only thing that remains.
