The presenter was using all the right buzzwords, promising that if we just mastered every nuance of instructional design, our results would skyrocket. It felt like another expensive, polished version of a “complete guide to cognitive load theory” that was written by someone who hasn’t stood in front of a restless Year 10 class in a decade. They make it sound like a mathematical formula, but in a real classroom, cognitive load isn’t a theory; it’s a survival mechanism.

I’m not here to give you a lecture on brain architecture or academic jargon that sounds impressive in a seminar but falls apart during a wet Wednesday afternoon. Instead, I want to talk about what this actually looks like when you’ve got thirty-two students, a broken photocopier, and twenty minutes to make a concept stick. This is a no-nonsense look at how to strip away the mental clutter and focus on the teaching that actually works. We aren’t aiming for perfection; we’re aiming for clarity in the chaos.

Before we get into the “how-to,” we need to look at the actual machinery we’re working with. Think of the cognitive architecture of the mind not as a vast, infinite library, but as a tiny, cluttered desk. You’ve only got a handful of “workspace” slots—your working memory—and once those are full, the brain simply stops processing. It’s like trying to run a high-end video game on a laptop from 2005; eventually, everything just freezes.

When we talk about the different types of pressure on that desk, we’re looking at intrinsic vs extraneous load. The intrinsic load is just the inherent difficulty of the topic—learning the French Revolution is naturally harder than learning about a pet hamster. You can’t change that. But the extraneous load? That’s the junk. It’s the poorly photocopied worksheet, the distracting PowerPoint animation, or the way I’ve phrased a question that makes no sense. If we aren’t careful, we spend all our students’ mental effort in learning just trying to navigate the mess we’ve created, leaving nothing left for the actual subject matter.

Now, this is where things usually get messy in the classroom. When we talk about intrinsic vs extraneous load, we’re essentially trying to figure out why a student looks like they’ve just run a marathon after only five minutes of a history lesson. Intrinsic load is just the inherent difficulty of the task itself—you can’t make the causes of the French Revolution “easier” without stripping the meaning out of it. That’s the core of the subject. The problem is that we often pile on massive amounts of extraneous load—the useless, distracting bits—that have nothing to do with the learning goal.

If I hand a Year 8 class a worksheet with neon borders, three different fonts, and a distracting clip-art image of a cartoon king, I haven’t made the lesson more engaging; I’ve just forced their brains to waste energy filtering out the rubbish. That’s poor instructional design in action. We want them spending their limited mental effort on the actual concept, not on trying to find the question amidst the visual noise. Our job isn’t to make everything simple, but to clear the clutter so the actual thinking can happen.

Five ways to use Cognitive Load Theory without losing your mind (or your lesson)

  • Cut the fluff from your slides. I know the temptation to make a presentation look “engaging” with animations and clip art, but if you’re adding decorative graphics that don’t actually teach the concept, you’re just adding noise. If a Year 10 student has to fight through a cluttered slide to find the actual point, you’ve already lost them.
  • Use worked examples instead of just “explaining.” Don’t just tell them how to solve a problem; show them the step-by-step process. When we’re short on time, giving them a scaffolded example reduces that initial mental heavy lifting, letting them see the pattern before they’re expected to replicate it from scratch.
  • Watch out for the “split-attention” trap. If you have a diagram on one page and the explanation on another, or if you’re asking them to look at a map while reading a dense paragraph of text, you’re forcing their brains to work twice as hard just to connect the dots. Keep the information and the explanation in the same visual space.
  • Don’t over-scaffold for too long. It’s easy to get stuck in a loop of providing so much support that the students never actually build their own mental models. Once they’ve got the gist, start pulling the rug out—gradually—so they have to start doing the heavy lifting themselves. That’s where the actual learning sticks.
  • Check the room before you pile it on. Before you decide to introduce a new complex concept, look at your class. If you’ve got a group that’s already struggling with the basics, adding a high-level theoretical layer is just going to cause a total system crash. Sometimes, the best way to manage cognitive load is to slow down and master the foundation first.

The Reality Check: Making it Work in Period 5

Stop trying to “optimise” everything; focus on cutting the noise first. If your worksheet is cluttered with unnecessary clip art or your slides are a wall of text, you aren’t helping them learn—you’re just adding to the mental pile-up they’re already struggling to manage.

Respect the limits of their working memory by breaking things down. It’s better to teach one concept clearly and move on than to rush through a massive scheme of work that leaves every student staring blankly at a page they can’t process.

Use scaffolding as a temporary bridge, not a permanent crutch. The goal is to gradually remove the support as they build their own mental models, otherwise, you’re just teaching them how to follow a template rather than how to actually think.

The Reality of the Working Memory

We spend far too much time debating the elegant nuances of cognitive architecture and not nearly enough time realising that if your lesson involves a thirty-slide deck and a worksheet with five different fonts, you aren’t ‘scaffolding’—you’re just creating a mental traffic jam that your students don’t have the energy to clear.

When you manage that intrinsic load and cut out the extraneous junk, you aren’t just being “efficient”—you are giving your students the breathing room they need to actually think.

You’re looking at your lesson plan for tomorrow and wondering how on earth you’re supposed to audit every single cognitive demand while also dealing with a broken photocopier and a Year 10 class that hasn’t found their pens yet. My advice? Don’t try to overhaul your entire pedagogy by Monday morning. Just pick one thing. One slide, one worksheet, or one instruction that you can make simpler and clearer. Teaching is a marathon, not a sprint, and most of the “revolutionary” ideas will fizzle out by next term. But if you focus on reducing the friction between the information and the student, you’ll find that the good stuff—the actual learning—starts to stick, even on a wet Wednesday afternoon.
